Sea urchin project

Creation of a technology for co-cultivation of sea urchins and sea cucumbers

The aim of the project is to develop biotechnology for cage culture of sea cucumber and sea urchin in a single technological process.

The project is aimed at creating a technology for cage culture up to marketable standards for currency-intensive mariculture facilities, which allows the use of an additional artificial biotope.

  • Sea urchin caviar is a valuable food product with many beneficial properties

  • In the wild sea urchin, the filling of caviar is unstable, the maximum filling reaches 14%, after fattening in cages, the filling reaches 25-30%, the taste and quality of the caviar becomes excellent.

  • The food supply of the wild sea urchin in the sea is not stable.

  • At the same time, cage feeding technologies for sea urchins are used in Japan.

  • The technology of cage feeding allows to ensure the stability of supply to the market and improve the quality and quantity of raw materials, as well as increase profits when doing this business.

  • Caged sea urchin caviar is richer in color and tastier. In this way, we can fully exploit the potential of the sea urchin and end up with a higher value product in the market.

  • Currently, we are developing a project for the organization of cage feeding of gray sea urchins (Strongylocentrotus intermedius) to a commercial size with an increase in filling up to 25-30% of the total weight of the sea urchin in the conditions of the coastal water area of the Far East seas of the Russian Federation jointly with the A .AT. Zhirmunsky "FEB RAS

Project benefits
  1. Deep processing of sea urchin caviar in the Russian Federation - creating a product with high added value.

  2. The use of cultivated seaweed for fattening stimulates the development of ecologically positive technologies of mariculture

  3. Creation of sustainable jobs on the coast, using incentives for enterprises in the regime of SVP and ASEZ

  4. Expansion of positive experience to other territories of the RF Far East (Khabarovsk and Kamchatka Territories, Sakhalin and Magadan Regions)

  5. Caviar supplies to the Russian market
